At last Dave sees the Matterhorn again on Day 3 of his Zermatt trip

After two days of clouds and fog, Day 3 of my Zermatt trip dawned clear. It was great to see the Matterhorn again on our 8am train up to Gornergrat. By 8.40am we were on the piste, almost alone, skiing down to Riffelberg. Then on the first chairlift back up and down to Gant - on completely deserted slopes - for the first cable car up to Hohtalli. And again, we skied deserted slopes for over 1000m vertical back down to Gant. It was 10am by the time crowds arrived. We love early starts in Zermatt!

The pistes were in typically spring condition - firm first thing softening by mid-morning. By mid-day we were ready for lunch at Chez Vroni in the rustic hamlet of Findeln. Delicious air dried meats and cheese starters and lamb main course. But Vroni has gone very commercial with a two-stage lunch booking system and a one-way system through the restaurant (signs tell you only to enter through one terrace entrance). So next time, it’s Findlerhof or Enzian for us.

By the afternoon, the pistes had softened to slush - even high up - and several pistes were closed due to avalanche danger. Hopefully tomorrow will be clear too - though weather forecasts were mixed. We’re heading up on the 8am train again and then planning on moving on to the Klein Matterhorn area and maybe skiing in to Italy.
