When Chris Castex, a snowboard and kayak instructor, in Bariloche got in touch to give us a local update on the situation in Argentina (ash and snow!), we thought it would be good to post it as a mini blog – a southern hemisphere resort moving into winter, as summer here seems a bit of a washout at present (well, the Glastonbury festival had a wet start!).

Winter may be getting into the groove a bit slower than usual down south, but they’re not letting that stop them enjoying the great outdoors and the Argentinian mountains.

Here’s Chris’s short update…

It snowed a bit more last night, but we’re still waiting for more to come to open the resort. On the other hand, all the other winter adventure sports are operating in perfect conditions. You can kayak on Gutierrez Lake, go mountain biking and rafting in Limay river. There’s parapenting in Cerro Lopez, trekking in Cerro Tronador and Chalhuaco valley, horseback tours. All the activities are not more than 30 minutes away from down town and all include the transfer.

Regarding the Puyewe Volcano, the activity is very low and everything is going on as normal. The airport is still closed, but due to reopen on 1 July and there are alternative airports open nearby. Buses are running normally and that is another way to get here. Cerro Catedral was hit by 1cm of volcanic ashes and that did not affect operations at all. We are just waiting for more snow to open.

We are looking forward to having a great season.

Facts: Bariloche is the gateway to Cerro Cathedral ski area, 20km away. There’s 600 hectares of skiable terrain – 53 pisted trails of various difficulties, which reach 2000m or so at their high point.
