A rare break from the hectic life that comes with running a chalet for a season saw Andy and Heather of Ice and Fire visiting Annecy for a day. By chance they stumbled upon a welcome party for the visiting Olympic committee – checking out the town’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. They report:

For those who are not sure what the fuss is about, Annecy is one of the contenders for the winter Olympics in 2018. Not since 1992 in Albertville has there been an event like this held in France; yes the “Tour” is a pretty big thing around here; but on the scale of things there is a Tour every year. To be chosen to hold such a prestigious event as the winter Olympics would be a bit special, so needless to say the people of Annecy were not going to let this opportunity to impress pass.

It was evident that something special was going on, a hot air balloon hovering over the lake and an air of excitement in the city. As the sun set on a stunning background, lights began to appear in the distance. People dressed in traditional clothing carrying torches started fires which seemed to set the whole city ablaze.

A torchlight procession appeared as the Committee’s coaches arrived, with thousands of flag waving people to welcome them. Street performers played and more people arrived for the evening. It was all topped off by a grand finale firework display – here’s Annecy’s welcome!

Annecy puts on a good display … and awaits the results.

So why is this so important to the people of La Plagne and Les Coches too? Well Annecy has pledged to use as much existing infrastructure as possible to minimize the impact on our mountains. That includes using the bob run in La Plagne and as many other existing amenities as possible.
