FORECAST UPDATE: 15/02/10
Sum-up
Turning milder
The big freeze is coming to an end as milder air edges in from the south-west. It will slowly become more unsettled, but widespread snow is not expected until later in the week. Before then it will be the south-western Alps that will catch the most snow, with resorts such as Isola 2000 in France expecting up to 30cm tomorrow Tuesday . Other southern resorts may also see a little snow, but many central and northern parts of the Alps will remain dry. On Wednesday, southern and some western areas will see some snow, but it will become milder with rain to 1000m or more in places. The north-eastern half of the Alps will again see little if any snow and it will feel milder everywhere. Not much change on Thursday, but on Friday and Saturday more widespread snow will affect the Alps.
Next detailed forecast on Thursday or Friday.
ALPINE FORECAST
Sum-up
Becoming a little less cold next week.
General situation
The vast pool of freezing air occupying much of mainland Europe will only slowly loosen its grip. The Alps can therefore expect a few more days of very cold weather before milder air tries to creep in from the south-west next week.
Forecast
Austria
Friday will be mostly cloudy across the northern Alps with a little snow at times. It will be drier and brighter further south, but it will remain very cold everywhere. On Saturday, any snow showers across the north will become lighter, with central and southern regions enjoying plenty of sunshine. It will remain cold everywhere. On Sunday, all regions should see plenty of sunshine and it might start to feel a little less cold.
France
Friday will be very cold with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells. It will be mostly dry but a few flurries still cannot be ruled out here and there. Saturday and Sunday should be dry just about everywhere with sunny spells. Temperatures will rise a fraction, but it will remain on the cold side.
Italy
Friday may see the odd flurry persist in the far south-west (e.g. the Milky-Way) as well as the Dolomites, but most parts will be dry with sunny spells, if very cold. Saturday and Sunday will remain mostly dry with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will begin to creep up but it will remain on the cold side.
Switzerland
Friday will be mostly dry with sunny spells, though it will remain cloudier across the northern fringes of the Alps where the odd flake of snow cannot be ruled out. It will remain very cold. On Saturday and Sunday there will be plenty of sunshine for all regions and, although still cold, temperatures will start to recover a fraction.
Outlook
The outlook is a little uncertain, but it is likely to become somewhat milder with the possibility of weather fronts approaching from the west.
