Can they be serious?

Segways on the snow

Segways on the snow

Remember the Segway human transporter, revealed to an astonished world in 2001? It’s an electrically powered two-wheeled device that saves you the effort of walking or cycling, and it was going to replace the car, at least in cities. It hasn’t done that, quite, but it still exists, and visitors to Méribel next season will find a fleet of off-road versions to play with.

Méribel introduced Segways to their slopes this summer, the first French resort to do so: ‘These innovative machines can tackle hills and snow. Silent and easy to use, the Segway is a new eco-friendly and fun way to discover the resort in summer and winter,’ says the tourist office.

First suggestions say that the Segways will be used on tracks between Méribel village and Mottaret, with other fun trails being created during the season. We can’t wait…

And other resorts are introducing them too: we’ve seen folk pottering about the main street in Ischgl - useful in a town with a fair bit of walking involved from one end to the other.
