Each winter Alpine resorts get a bunch of new places to stay, from outwardly luxurious to simplistic but eco-friendly. Whatever your preferences, check out this bunch of trendy newcomers in some of Europe’s major resorts.
The Forsthofalm, Leogang – Austria
Eco- and organic-friendly
Austria’s first all-wood hotel has opened in Leogang, a quiet resort with slopes linked to the Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski circus. The Forsthoflam is an individual building beside the original hotel. The wooden walls are glue and metal free, assembled with wooden bolts. The interior is a modern and simplistic lifestyle hotel, of low energy consumption and suites designed in natural wood. The restaurant menus include organic meals and local produce.
Costs: from 129 euros pppn, including gourmet half-board. Two night stays available from 148 euros pppn.
Smart Hotel Santa Cristina – Selva Val Gardena, Italy
Good value, flexible choice
The chain of low cost but trendy ‘Smart’ hotels has come to Selva Val Gardena. The hotel opened on 4 December 2010, offering basic but modern rooms. All are carpet-free to reduce allergens, with simplistically-designed fixtures. A key attraction is that you can book short stays here in the heart of the ski area, at room-only prices. So, it’s flexible. Meals are available in the restaurant, including gluten and lactose-free menus. The hotel can provide ski storage and arrange lift passes.
Costs: from 32 euros pppn. Stay less than four nights and there is a 3 euro supplement per night. Meals are extra.
No 14 – Verbier, Switzerland
Looking for luxury?
No 14 is a fully renovated building, now a luxurious chalet sleeping 26 guests. If you are a ‘no expense spared’ kind of skier, this place fits plush in a big way. Created by London designers, and with features such as marble floor bathrooms, indoor pool and a spa, it’s no surprise that this swish baby will set you back £1750 per person per week.

Altitude Lodge – Les Gets, France
Families wanting style and convenience
This is a catered lodge looking for fairly wealthy families. Your kids will enjoy family rooms, hot tubs and sauna, while the parents peruse the piste-side bar. The lodge sleeps 18-29 guests, and is situated at 1530m on the piste at Les Chavannes.

Tauern hotel and leisure resort – Kaprun, Austria
Seeking spas, wellness and relaxation
This winter sees the opening of a big new spa attraction in Kaprun, a mini health resort. As well as a 4-star hotel, the Tauern incorporates an ultra-modern spa and pool area covering 2 × 11m2. There are several restaurants on site too.
Costs: Double rooms from 158 euros per person per night (Jan – April).
Helvetia Hotel – Morgins, Portes du Soleil
Small but contemporary; quiet location
This is an old hotel turned new and stylish. The original 19th building has been rebuilt, now with 28 contemporary rooms, a spa and sauna. The Helvetia sits 150m from the Foilleuse chairlift, in Morgins – the home resort of Olympic gold medal winner in Vancouver 2010, Didier Défago.

Le Strato – Courchevel, France
More French fineries, in a fine resort
The Strato opens its doors in 1850 this winter 2010, an elegant and comfortable chalet-style hotel with a rather swanky ski room. A unique feature of this hotel is the champagne bar … in the ski room. Relax, de-boot and sip a glass of champers before retiring to your suite. There’s a spa too.
Costs: over 1,000 euros per room per night (based on January prices)
Chalet hotel Crozat – Morzine, France
Young at heart, and boarder appeal
The Crozat is now under the Rude Chalet management. Refurbished to match the company style of youthful, decent accommodation at affordable rates. The style is definitely Xbox and snowboarder, close to the centre of morxine; 5 min walk to nearest lift. hotel has a pool and sauna and games room
Cap Vacances – La Plagne Montalbert, France
All-in one holiday, minimum fuss and eco-focused
This one is a bit different: an eco-style either on a full board or all-inclusive basis. The Cap Vacances club hotel is fitted with solar panels and wood-fired boiler to ensure its green appeal. Guests benefit from a private lift to the slopes and on-mountain location.
Costs: full board includes meals, lodging, family activities from 300 euros per adult, per week. All-inclusive starts at 465 euros per adult, per week and includes a six-day lift pass too.
