It’s Austria’s turn!

At last we can report some decent snowfall for Austrian skiing. It has snowed moderately across most parts of the country during the past few days. And with a fall in temperatures, we can expect the pistes to be improving nicely after their recent bout of mild weather.

Unusually for March, it is rather chilly out in the Alps at present – daytime temperatures are generally well below zero, and as much as minus 23 reported on the Hintertux glacier, minus 18 on Kaprun’s Kitzsteinhorn slopes this morning (Tuesday). The Hintertux glacier has an upper settled snow depth of almost 3m.

Most resorts received 10-20cm fresh powder at the weekend, some of the best reserved for the Tirol and Arlberg regions. St Anton (60/310cm) and Ischgl (25/105cm) gained another 10 cm on Sunday, refreshing resort level runs. In the Ziller valley, up to 25cm fell. Further west in Schladming, settled snow depths are now 90/110cm – with new snow to valley level. Our editors will be reporting back on conditions in the Salzburg region shortly – so watch out for their blogs.

Lower altitude resorts such as Alpbach, Wildschonau and St Wolfgang all received 10-15cm and report good, grippy conditions on piste. Off-piste has improved too, with ample powder to play in. So there is plenty of good rising on offer at the moment, with spring not quite on the horizon just yet.

And further snowfall is on the way, apparently .... There is more cloud creeping in to the west on Tuesday.
