Winter is not quite over yet, and as we move back towards the glacier seasons there was good news from Austria and Germany this week …

There has been some welcome snowfall for Austrian resorts still open for skiing and boarding this season, and for the glaciers hoping to continue with operations during the summer months. While the best of it is confined mostly to 2000m or above, many resorts are enjoying a dose of fresh powder to the pistes – 10-20cm or thereabouts. It has been fairly cool of late too, keeping the snow conditions in decent shape on the upper slopes. The Stubai (20/180cm) and Kitzsteinhorn glaciers both received moderate snowfalls, and are expecting further showers over the next few days. Sölden has 20 lifts open still, eight on its glacier slopes.

The Arlberg resorts too received mid-week snowfall, to valley level briefly, though there has been a steady return to milder temperatures in the region: the freezing level is expected around 2200-2500m in the coming week. The Galzig mountain still has a settled snow depth of 235m, which should see it nicely through to the end of the season. It is snowing on Sunday in Ischgl, up at Idalp the cloud is down and visibility poor; in the town it is raining. But there is plenty of decent snow cover at Idalp for the remainder of the season, and fresh tracks waiting for Monday’s skiers and boarders. There are still 16 lifts open in Obergurgl (110cm) too.
