First ‘big’ snows in New Zealand

Resorts in the southern hemisphere are preparing to start their winter season, and there has been good snowfall reported already in New Zealand. Treble Cone received a good 40cm in the latest reports. And keen skiers were trekking up the slopes for the first powder turns of the year (check out our powder pic above!)

One of the first to open though will be Coronet Peak, due to fire up the lifts this Saturday 5 June. At this stage in the season they are still building a snow base, but the upper slopes have good cover (50cm); snowmaking is boosting that too. The resort is planning to unveil its new Meadow Express chairlift too – the first of two lifts to be operating for the opening weekend. Five trails and the beginner area are expected to be available.

Mt Hutt, which is already reporting a 100cm snow base – great stuff this early in the winter – is due to open a week later on 12 June.

Treble Cone has a planned opening date of 24 June … plenty of time to top up those powder stashes. Early days though, and they have only 30cm on top at present. The resort’s main developments this season are to the freestyle facilities and to its performance camp programme.

Chile’s skiing underway …

… well, only just. One resort, El Colorado, is open so far. But heavy snowfall has given the resort a great start to Chile’s season.
