Sadley the Spar in Arc 1600 has been taken over and it is now a Sherpa. As part of the changes, the lovely butchers counter has gone and is replaced by small selection of prepacked meats. On some days this was a very small selection of chicken fillets. I suppose this just increases the pressure to jump on the funicular and visit the Aldi in Bourg.

Having just spent two glorious weeks in the Three Valleys, first with 10 other lads, and second with my wife, I was struck by two major departures from the Skier’s Code which I was taught when I started to ski over 30 years ago.

Firstly, the number of times that I came across a group of (Usually British) snowboarders sitting in the MIDDLE of a busy piste. Over the years since they first appeared on the pistes of the world, we have become accustomed to the group of boarders sitting, just over the edge of the ridge, and just out of view, and acknowledge the fact that they need to sit there, in order to make it easier to stand up. Sitting bang in the middle of the piste, is however another matter. There were 11 of us there for the first week, and we decided that action should be taken to combat these bad manners and the flagrant disregard of the Skiers Code. Therefore, on the occasions where it was safe to do so, (at least three times a day) those unfortunate boarders sitting in the middle of the piste, received 11 snow soakings. In the interests of eveness, the woman skier who was also standing in the middle of one of the reds into Les Minuers, on the phone, received the same treatment.

Secondly, why does nobody - particularly, but not exclusively, boarders - bother to look round before they move off!

I guess manners is a thing of the past - if you can’t beat the, join them!

After skiing Les Arcs on my own last weekend I was really, really impressed with with how friendly everyone was .I started chatting to a stranger on a lift on the Friday and ended up skiing the rest of the day together.

Then on Saturday evening I was eating in the Cairn restaurant in 1600 when the the owner of the Chez Fernand restaurant came in and said hello. A few minutes later he came and silently put a glass of liquor on the table for me before disappearing off to chat to other customers.

No wonder I like the resort.

Hi,

I am going to Geneva next week and am trying to find a place or car hire firm that will rent our bike racks. I have found this firm http://www.rhinocarhire.com/Car-Hire/Switzerland-Car-Hire/Geneva-International-Airport-Car-Hire.aspx and the prices seem quite good and they do ski rack and snow chains and I have asked if they can also supply bike racks so hopefully I will know later.

Has anybody else tried to hire bike racks ?

Thanks

Can anyone recommend a cheap, or at least cheaper than average, place to hire skis and boots in Les Menuires? Last year in Val D’Isere there was one place that had broken away from the apparent local price-fixing cartel and was doing 2 for the price of 1 deals. Made a huge difference! We’re hoping there might be something similar in Les M. Thanks.

After reading Snowberry’s own website, one might believe that they have lots of makes and models of skis, of so many sizes, available on most if not all days. Well, that was not the case we experienced.

Perhaps Snowrental.net’s best category is not enough. Perhaps Snowberry simply don’t have as many skis as they claimed. Who knows…

One of our group member booked the highest category through snowrental.net. When we get to Snowberry, there was no Dynastar Omeglass, no Rossignol 9S, and we were given a pair of Dynastar Contact which looked quite tired. Based was not well ground or waxed, and edges not sharp. Snowberry’s website talks about their technical excellence, their dedication to giving well serviced skis everytime, their dedication on availability of just about everything. The skis were 5cm long anyway

These claims were NOT reflected in our experience.

Following the first day, the skis went back to shop for a service. Skis came out well prepared the following morning. Top marks to the servicemen.

A couple of days later, we wanted a pair of shorter skis. The technician was cheeky. First he asked “What’s wrong with your skis?”. We said there is nothing wrong with the skis but want shorter ones. Then we asked what skis they have. He asked back “What do you want?”. So we asked again for Omeglass and 9S and such like. Then the technician said they do not have them available. Then he added “we are reluctant to rent out world cup skis to normal customers. Race skis are very different to normal skis.” We said “we are not asking for WC race skis. Those are slalom carvers.” The technician then talked about that he is a racer and he uses race skis, and with all due respect, we aren’t, with comments that [my] skis are women’s skis. We began to wonder what he was getting to. At the end it was clear: they don’t have the top skis that they advertised and have to make us to settle to whatever they have.

Those were unnecessarily unrefined comments to put the customers down to serve the purpose of justifying unavailability and not able to honour what is advertised on the website.

Hi All

just wondering about snow cannons, we know nearly everywhere has them but do resorts who are struggling for snow put them on ALL night? if so, how much snow can they make in a night?
Never thought about it before as nearly everywhere we have skied you couldnt really see the snow cannons at night to see if they were on or not…...... also we are off to Andorra in january and are starting to wonder about lack of snowfall compared to the alps, they apparently have 85% coverage with snow cannons, but are they able to literally build a skiable base from snow cannons alone??
