Good evening!
After last year’s “find” of the Salzburger Sportwelt and adjacent areas (see previous posting) I am looking for pastures new.
Saalfelden has only three lifts BUT what looks like access by bus to High King Mountain (HKM) AND the whole Sallbach-Hinterglemm area. This is good news for mile eaters like me.  It’s also accesible directly by train from Salzburg. I’ve emailed the Austrian Tourist office for more info on the access issue. But if any of you out there have stayed there in order to straddle two reasonably large ski areas, let me know!

Have only been there during the day in the summer, whilst staying in Kaprun a few years ago - to go to the toboggan run grin From memory it was quite towny, rather than villagey. Maria Alm is close by and a much nicer village but not sure just how much skiing is there either. Zell/Saalfelden/Saalbach all within easy reach of each other though.

Thanks for that. The tourist office tells me are regular free bus links to Leogang (for Saalbach and Hinterglemm) and Maria Alm (for HKM). Journey time 15-20 mins. Also trains to Zell am See (10 mins).
Looks good in terms of connecting to a total of 488k of pistes!
Getting Half-board offers from the toursit office from €287 for a week in January.
Nothin wrong so far!!

That’s a great price. Just shows if you’re prepared to travel a little, you can save loads of dosh. I’, guessing it’s the equivalent of staying in Bourg St Maurice for the Tarenteise (sp?) or Landeck for Arlberg and surrounding valleys. Hope you enjoy

Just back from my week in Saalfelden.
It did pretty well what it said on the tin: a perfect, cheap, base mid-way between Leogang/Saalbach/Hinterglemm (c.200k pistes) and Hochkoening (c. 180 k pistes).
Busses to both departed the town centre for a 15 minute journey in the morning that left you at the bottom of the lifts at opening time.

I stayed in the perfectly fine Haus Troth for B&B. H/B options would include Gashauses Lindlwirt/Brandlwirt and Brueke (possibly working out better value with a H/B package (about €45 per night)).

Access is by public bus from Salzburg airport (€10, 70mins), train for the town centre (same price, 1hr 45min) or by shuttle (€39, holiday-shuttle.at).

So, mileage hungry lone-wolves, add this to your list (along with Alpendorf-see elsewhere) of sneaky places where you can ski for miles in places where you would think you can’t.

I’m happy to answer any queries you may have.
