Who can tell me the best film titles showing skiing/boarding action, wipe-outs, extreme terrain, etc (non-instructional)?  What are your favourites?

I have an old one called The Blizzard of Aaah’s - featuring Glen Plake. It’s great stuff, even with the old 80’s style kit (which makes it even more fun).

Warren Miller’s annual movies are pretty good too. As for wipeouts, I have an older Ski Sunday compilation that has some classic crashes on the downhill…

I enjoy some of the boarding ones, but the naff music really irritates me - why does it always have to be rap?! (or am I just sooooo old).

The Secrets of Freeriding is another one on the shelf in my place.

Some friends of mine bumped into Glen Plake in the woods above Chamonix the other day. Apparently the pink hair remains. He gave them a loud "Baaanjooooor" with a cracking Californian accent!

Yeah - he’s barely changed - I saw him at the ski show.

Also watched an extreme skiing feature with Remy Lacluse - top mountain guide and seriously steep skiing nut. Amazing stuff and Remy’s talk at the KMFF was superb.

Incidentally- a great day/evening out for watching ski and mountaineering movies is the Kendal MountainFilm Festival - I try and get along most years, but for the first time I made to the dedicated ski day last year. And can highly recommend it… Great for a laugh, some key speakers such as Remy (see above) and dreamy snow-filled movies to make any enthusiast quiver with excitement. Anyway… it all takes place in er, Kendal, in the Lake District - in November.  I usually travel up for an overnight stay, then head out in to the hills next day.

It’s a cheesy movie, but I love Aspen Extreme - a film at the time billed as ‘Top Gun on the Slopes’. The story is okay. But some of the skiing sequences, particularly the ice water fall scene are incredible.

So is anyone going to see the new film ‘Frozen’? Disaster on a chairlift n all that stuff!  Me thinks it’s going to be in the Vertical Limits / Extreme Ops /Jaws kind of daft - but a hoot anyway.  I have a soft spot for all those kind of films, so I’ll be heading to my nearest flicks to catch it (if it appears in deepest Zummerset!) grin

Der Weisse Rausch (The White Flame), Leni Riefenstahl, 1931 -  the ski-ing is amazing.  You can watch it on video.google.com.  Enjoyable even if you don’t speak German.

Of course there is the classic ski film (1970), although it looks very dated now..Downhill Racer.
Quietly cocky Robert Redford joins U.S. ski team as downhill racer and clashes with the team’s coach, played by Gene Hackman. Lots of good skiing action leading to an exciting climax.
