Under this heading you could also have a listing of the greatest verticals being offered and of the resorts offering wide and easy cruising runs or "motorways".

We’ll consider vertical. On-piste or off-piste?

We already have "Motorway cruising" (p94, 2006 edn)

More shortlist ideas welcome!

I know I’m in a bit of a minority but I like Cross Country and downhill skiing. A shortlist that highlights downhill resorts that also have a significant amount of XC would be good.

Hi Chris,

Yeah I agree that "big vertical" would be a good one.  I would also benefit from the "decent XC" as am looking into a XC /spa (hopefully with yoga) honeymoon at a scenic resort with a downhill option because my fiancee doesn’t like chairlifts! ...and perhaps a long-shot… can you also include a "Spa/Wellness" shortlist?

Others I would find useful would be "good for DIY" and "easy transfers"

cheers,
Tim

Tim,

I think that St Moritz or Celerina must have something for you! Magic downhill, extensive XC and more spas than you can shake a ski stick at!

Thanks John.

I will add St Moritz/Celerina to my honeymoon shortlist which incidently already includes Saas Fee (am I right to include Saas Fee?).  Any others?

I wouldn’t go to Saas for the Cross Country. There really isn’t that much there and you can really only go in one direction (bit like the downhill in that respect. However, unlike the downhill, conditions are a bit iffy and piste maintenance is a bit poor. The XC is often shut altogether. That apart, it is a wonderful part of the Alps!

That?s good to know ? thanks John ? perhaps the book should mention these limitations?

Further indulging you all in my honeymoon dilemma? I am leaning towards seeking areas with a reasonably secluded spa hotel with access to & X-country and downhill.  Originally (besides Saas Fee) I was thinking Laukerbad (because of the spas) but I am not sure whether any of its spa hotels are secluded enough or whether it has the X country for beginners that we would want.  Reading the book its seems that the Dolomites may be a good area to focus my search ? especially the Sella Ronda and Cortina areas, however, as with the others I wonder how secluded can you get with spa hotels in these areas and how conveniently located the hotels are in terms of access to downhill?

It’s presumably years too late to help with the honeymoon choice ... sorry about that ... but we’re still interested in readers’ ideas for new shortlists in the book.

So our shortlist of new shortlists at present is:
big vertical
decent XC
fab spa/wellness
good for diy hols

More?

Chris
easy transfers

Thanks Paul

We already do "Modern convenience" and "Reliable snow", but something specifically related to altitude is a possibility.
