Hi all

We’re canvassing opinion on our weather charts that accompany the snow forecasts: Do you find them useful? Do you bother looking at them at all? Want more explanation of individual maps, etc?

We have previously incorporated met office images, but also wanted to mix n match these with ones from some of the excellent weather sites across Europe. We are aware that in some cases the images are too small at present; we are sorting that problem out. [NB: this week’s forecast (18 Dec) does not show the related charts]

We’d appreciate your views on this and any other aspects of our current snow sections.

ta

Wendy

Hi Wendy, I love the snow snippets section of this site, the snow forecast section is very useful but I would agree with you that the Meteoblue charts are too small to really see, therefore I have Meteoblue and also meteox in my favourites section and then visit them independently, also a great reference that I use is Snowforecast.com and J2ski.com. as well as resorts own websites and webcams. I find Meteox very good for precipitation charts and the google radar charts. I find that by looking at several references I can get a really good idea of what conditions are going to be like in resort. Keep up the great work with this site. Regards Adrian.

Richard, yes I think sometimes there can be too much information.

I quite like the snippets for highlighting major dumps or worthwhile conditions for those folk still to plan a trip - or maybe planning another etc. Agree it can be a bit disheartening to read about the heavy rain or thin cover when you’re about to head out somewhere. But it’s also good to know if Siberia will be waiting when packing clothing too! And how early/late season is shaping up - people’s sometimes misconceptions of, say, skiing in April for example when they could be missing out on a fab trip.

I guess Wendy was replying to something I’d posted (see SPAM ISSUES in the Site Display Problems section for what happened to it). Unfortunately I cannot remember what I wrote. Possibly that once I’m committed to a holiday (and the nearest to departure I’ve ever managed to book is about 2 weeks) then the forecast is no use - because it is too late to do anything about it. Once I’m in resort a good local forecast is really important each day, but I won’t have internet access to get it from here…. Richard

I reckon I must also have cited the Ischgl tourist office’s next-day local forecast (issued each evening) as far and away the best I’ve seen for the right amount of information presented in instantly-comprehensible form. My Galtur hotel had a print-out on its noticeboard usuually by dinnertime.

The forecast had pictograms at intervals round a clockface at intervals from 7.30am to 4.30pm. Below that they showed wind (not speed, but strength on a simple scale) at low and high altitude, morning and afternoon. Temperature must have been in there somewhere too, possibly in the form of the freezing point altitude.
