Winter in a resort

I want to spend this winter in a ski resort, from December to March. I’ve been skiing plenty of times, but always for a week or two at at time and in hotels. I was wondering if anyone had any information on apartments for a season, ski resorts that have staying power to keep me interested for a season.

I tend to go to Austria skiing so I’ll add my tuppence worth for Austria.

St Anton has been a long standing favourite of mine and has plenty of skiing to keep you happy. In addition there is some excellent sports facilities too - climbing centre, indoor tennis, excellent swimming complex (although I’m too busy enjoying the skiing and apres to go). Couple of downsides - it is expensive as Austrian resorts go and the whole apres scene isn’t to everyones liking. If you had a car I might be tempted to stay around Landeck which is a town further down the Inn valley. It does have some of Austria’s best skiing valleys within 30 mins - Oetztal for Obergurgl/Solden, Panznaun for Ischgl/Kappl, Serfaus/Fiss and the Arlberg for St Anton/Lech etc.

Other option is in Salzburgerland. You could base yourself around say Radstadt and have the super duper ski pass thingy - completely forgotten name sorry but something like 1000km of runs available on the one pass. Have not done but read many good reports about the area. Tends to be lots of small charming resorts rather than a few resorts with 250km of runs. Think the Tirol is trying something like this http://snowcard.tirol.at/ but the major resorts of St Anton and Ischgl are sadly not included.

Thanks boabski. I haven’t been skiing in Austria since I was a kid, definitely an option.

Thanks for the advice.

The other one that came to mind (in similar mould to Landeck) was Bourg St Maurice. Good base for all the Tarrenaise resort (Val d’Isere, La Pagne ....)

If you visit the Immobiliers web sites or phone them directly (get the phone number from the resort web page or tourist office) you will find that they have plenty of apartments available for a seasons let. The rate for a season is significantly less than you will pay for each week individually, probably about half. If you have the time and could afford it I would also reccomend you visited the resort in the autumn to look at the accommodation yourself.

The next question is where.

If you want to sample the highlights of Apres Ski then clearly somewhere like Val d’Isere or St. Anton would be a suitable destination.

However, if you want to get the most skiing and the biggest possible choice for your money then in my humble opinion it has to be Bourg st Maurice. BsM is a real town (and because of this even its most ardent admirers would not call it pretty) with good supermarkets, lots of restaurants and bars, excellent rail links to the rest of Europe, even direct trains to London and of course a funicular upto Les Arcs and the whole Paradiski area at your immediate disposal. Within 30 minutes drive you also have the 3 valleys, Tignes, Val d’Isere, St. Foy, and the resorts straddling the Col de la madeleine and the Col du Petit st Bernard. For a day off you can even get the train to Chamberey or Lyon. Apartments here are also less expensive than the purpose built ski resorts.

One Christmas I met an old man in Les Arcs who even though he could barely walk always rented an apartment for the whole season. He skied a bit, relaxed a bit and enjoyed himself. Have a good time.

Hi all.
I have just joined this site.God knows why i have not done it before.
I have skied all over Europe and after many years and many different resorts my friends and i always head back to St Anton.
I have been there about 12 times now and still cannot find a reason to go elsewhere.
The Galzig and new Rendlbahn are superb and as i stay in Haus Rudi Matt which is 30 meters from Galzig and an easy walk from Rendlbahn and Gampenbahn i really will not change.
To go there for a full winter is my dream and there is tons to do as someone pointed out.
My liver is not happy about my upcoming 2 week trip in Jan 2011 but hey what the hell.
Hats off to the skiers bible for the presentation and content.
I always by my skiing/boarding friends a copy for Xmas or a birthday and so far nobody has been cheesed off with me for giving a substandard present.
Is it only me or are there other snow junkies who look at snow forecasts and webcams daily from about November.
My sister thinks i am crazy.
Regards all
Nick

Hi Mogul 61

I thought I was the only sado that studied the snow forcasts and weather radars about a month or two before my first trip.  Hats off to u, I just find it really exciting even looking at previous seasons photos and videos.  I’m sure lots of my non skiing friends must get fed up with it when three or four of us in our group start to discuss our forthcoming season trips, that seems to be the end of our night and nothing else gives as much satisfaction.  I’ve booked my first flights for a pre Xmas weekend today and sure eneough after leaving Ryanairs website, next stop was the resort webcam, don’t know why really just had to do it!!!

Interested in St Anton though and after reading a couple of threads on here tonight I may just have a look at it in more detail.

Happy skiing all
