Tough call indeed. In fact, you’re really going to have to try both before you make up your mind. Still, yoiu do ask so for me, it has to be Zermatt. Val has fantastic skiing, wonderful scenery, some great restaurants etc. However Zermatt just has a unbeatable ambience, absolutely mindblowing scenery (not just the mighty Matterhorn) and the most fantastic restaurants (on and off the mountains) in the Alps.

If your question is purely about skiing, it probably depends on what kind of skier you are. If it is all about piste kilometres for you, then Val is probably the more logical choice. If it is all about tough runs, both places will press all the right buttons. Ski convenience - Val comes out on top - but convenience is unlikely to be the reason for picking either resort.

Good luck trying to make up your mind. Maybe flipping a coin is your best option!

Hi nicehaed123,

I have been to both and for pure ski area it has to be Val D’isere! I did a season there and it is amazing! There is something for everyone.

Both great places and great skiing. I think I would go with Zermatt for the great food, scenery and skiing. But it is a close call. I stayed in Tignes and skied in Val d’Isere as good chalet. Then in Cervinia and across to Zermatt. It is a possibility if your budget is limited.

Have fun.

I know I am late to this string but I have to restrain myself from ski thoughts until September is gone.  Not easy.

Zermatt is my favourite of the two (been 5 times to one visit to Val d’Isere) but would go to both again.  Whilst not wishing to over simplify it, Val is for the under thrities and Zermatt for grown ups.  Both have great skiing and there’s as much off-piste in Zermatt/Monterosa as in Val/Tignes, but it is more “interesting” to get to.  There’s great heliskiing too.  But its the food and scenery in Zermatt that is second to none and the transfer by rail from Zurich, though long, is far more enjoyable than the two+ hour minibus from Geneva (N.B. Pick up wine, meats, cheese and stuffed peppers from the deli in Zurich airport - just above the train platforms - and sit back).
