Does anyone know the best source of prescription sunglasses that are suitable for skiing? One of our party is slightly shortsighted and is interested in having some real ski sunglasses made to her prescription.

hi,any decent opticians should be able to accommadate your needs, the sunglasses should be uva and uvb protective and also give good clarity in what is called ‘flat light’ (this is when the sun is clouded over and or towards the end of the day as the sun dims,so there are no shadows to show the undulations in the snow, this kind of light makes negotiating different snow conditions slightly more difficult, baring in mind a persons eyesight changes with time a costly pair of sunglasses made especialy for skiing could prove costly in the long run.
But if i was in the market for a good pair of specialy made sunglasses i would contact Vuarnet as they were designed originaly by the french skiing 1962 olympic gold medalist Jean Vuarnet in conjunction with the Pariloux opticians in Paris,i would imagine your friend could obtain a pair to thier eyesight requirements for around £150-£200 or so(this is just my opinion though as i do not where glasses i can only give an estimation for the price as my Vuarnet sunglass were £75 some years ago).
Sorry i annot be of more help.
many regards

hi have been having a look,if you type vuarnet presciption sunglasses in to the google search bar there is a sight called http://www.sailgb.com that can sort some glasses out for you, from what i can see if you give them your details and ask for a pair of Vuarnet prescription sunglasses they can make them and deliver them usually within 20 days (as the vuarnet glasses will be manufactured in southern france for you).Alternatively any uk supplier Snow & rock, ellis bringham etc should be able to help .
best of luck
many regards .

I recently bought a pair os prescription ski/sunglasses from Specsavers from their Osris range. I’ve had problems in the past with prescriptions especially if the frame has any sort of curve to the design, which distorts my vision. I’m happy to say that these sunglasses are terrific - might not be up there with some of the frames on the market, but they do for me, and they were part of the buy one get one pair free offer.

My experience with a regular high street optician has been that the darkest grade of lens they offer isn’t dark enough for the Vallee Blanche in April. When I complained, they said they limit the density of the tint because darker lenses would be unsafe for driving. But I don’t want them for driving ...

I got mine from Specsavers. They had a set which worked perfectly for my prescription and I’ve been very happy with them - downside is that you have to make sure you carry a pair of glasses, in a suitably protective case, for when you go indoors. Plus they look a lot cooler than the OTG goggles I normally wear.
