Zermatt building another gondola
One of Switzerland’s most prestigious resorts will gain another new lift - a gondola is to be built at Schwarzsee for next season.
An extension of the Matterhorn Express, an eight seat gondola, will unite Trockener Steg, Schwarzsee and Furgg directly - removing the need for the slow aerial lift back up to Schwarzsee from Furgg. That lift is being dismantled.
To improve the connection at Furgg, a short tunnel will be built to accommodate the new lift. The gondola will have a capacity of 2800 people/per hour and a ride time of nine minutes between Schwarzsee and Trockener Steg. This should also help to relieve queues at Furgg, currently served by an old cable car.
Zermatt has made huge investments in recent seasons to improve its lift systems, in particular travel to and from each of its mountains. The new addition will also mean a quicker ride time to Trockener Steg - 25 minutes.
