Chamonix to open ‘Glaciorium’
There will soon be a new attraction for Chamonix, home to mountaineering, challenging skiing and big scenery. The ‘Glaciorium’ is due to open in May 2012.
The Compagnie du Mont Blanc will soon open a new visitor attraction at Montenvers Mer de Glace - the ‘Glaciorium’. The centre will be a dedicated exhibition to all things glacier-related – educating about their creation, how they change etc.
The idea is the result of enthusiasm and feedback from visitors to the area, keen to know more about glaciers and their role in the area’s mountain ranges. The modern building will house interactive features, as well as the more usual museum-like displays. Its site is close to the hotel de Montenvers, reached by train from Chamonix.
In addition to this new attraction, work has started on renovating the Aiguille de Midi top station. This historic icon that sits at 3842m above the town is the focus of a new project to enhance the visitor experience. Not only will there be a new skyway viewing platform and small museum, but there will be a covered terrace and walkway; plus inside is being refitted to a more comfortable standard. The work is due to take three years to complete.
