Child dies in chairlift fall

Sugar Bowl resort
A seven-year-old boy has died after falling 60ft from a chairlift at a north Californian ski resort.
The accident happened last Sunday at Sugar Bowl resort near Lake Tahoe. The boy, who had been training with the local junior racing team, was riding the Mount Lincoln lift in the ski area when he fell. He sustained serious head injuries and underwent emergency surgery at a nearby medical centre. But his death was announced on Wednesday.
A resort spokesman said that an inspection of the chairlift had been carried out, but no malfunction was found and the lift resumed operations the following day. The chairlift is a fast quad, serving the main mountain from the base area, and is fitted with a safety bar (some older lifts in the US are not).
