Momentum Ski’s City Ski Championships and Festival was held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, this winter – the first time in this resort. The event took place between 15-18 March, when over 280 participants from London and Geneva’s financial communities hit the resort’s slopes for a few days of friendly competition.

Getting down to business!

The event includes individual and business races in slalom and giant slalom, as well as a dual parallel slalom. And there were categories for the fastest male, female and mixed teams; plus the fastest individual – won this year by Till Hufnagel of Goldman Sachs. Lloyd’s of London took the fastest male team title.

Colin Jackson joins in the fun

Joining the city slickers were a number of celebrity guests, including Matt Chilton and Graham Bell of BBC Ski Sunday fame. Antoine Deneriaz, Olympic Downhill Gold Medalist at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and ambassador for Swiss manufacturing company Zai, also attended as did Konrad Bartelski (three times Olympic skier); Colin Jackson, World record breaking athlete and Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal.

As well as the competitions, there was a panel discussion in the form of a ‘Question Time in the mountains’. It was the first Financial Times Alpine Forum and was hosted by FT Weekend Editor Caroline Daniel, with the panel including various members of the BBC and BBC Radio 4.

Director at Momentum and organiser of the City Ski Championships Amin Momen said, “After 12 years in Courmayeur, Italy, we are delighted to have relocated the Championships to Switzerland and that it has been such a success. Crans-Montana has fantastic facilities, including the World Cup Giant Slalom course which was perfect for the main competition. We look forward to returning next year.”

The 2013 event has already been scheduled for 15th to 17th March (Fri-Sun). Let’s hope they enjoy as much good snow and sunshine as this winter.
