Cute chalets or swanky boutique?

Stylish and contemporary sums up many of this winter’s new hotel and chalet offerings – but there are traditional places too. So if you fancy something a bit different, why not check out these five:

1. Obertauern, Austria – Manggei

The Manggei (‘Marmot’) is Obertauern’s first designer hotel, due to open in November. The hotel is designed with the minimalist in mind, clean lines, light and airy – using local wood and stone. Facilities are reached via a series of underground walkways. And unlike many resort hotels, this one offers only a bed and breakfast arrangement, but there is a bar and lounge, pool and wellness area. Another attraction is that the hotel also offers single rooms, as well as doubles and family suites.

A week’s stay including lift pass starts at 629 euros for a double room, 769 euros for a single. Rooms are also available on a shorter-stay basis: daily rates start at 68 euros.

2. Zermatt, Switzerland – The Cervo

When the swanky Cervo opens in Zermatt this winter, it will combine hotel living in individual chalets, set among the slopes and woodland in a quiet part of the resort. Each chalet has its own spa too. You book a room or the whole chalet. The Cervo is close to the Sunnegga funicular, with great Matterhorn views. There is a smart lounge bar, offering regional wines and food. Room prices start at SF390 per day.

3. Méribel, France – Hélios

Méribel’s new 4-star Hélios is a small, chalet-style ski-in ski-out hotel near the resort centre. Due to open in December the Hélios features 18 suites, plus family rooms, a gastronomic restaurant and wellness centre. You can pop in for lunch too; slip off your boots and pop on a pair of hotel slippers or sit back and relax on the terrace. Prices start at 280 euros per day (January).

4. Aspen, USA – Viceroy

This is Colorado’s newest five-star hotel, in the rapidly developing Snowmass Village. Oak-furnished condo-apartments and luxury baths sum it up. There is a restaurant (the Eight K), spa and pool. Crystal Finest offer a week’s stay from £1059pp.

And for something different…

5. Leogang, Austria – Priesteregg chalet village

Truly gorgeous if you like the authentic chalet experience (we do!): lots of wood, atmosphere and the quieter side of the Saalbach ski area – at Leogang. Nine chalets make up the new mountain village of Priesteregg, furniture is organic and the design is in keeping with the mountain setting, each comfortably sleeping up to eight people. There is a bar and sauna. What’s more, the price is standard for the whole season: 155 euros per person per night.
