Sunday saw eight Michelin-starred Italian chefs cooking their special dish created for each of eight mountain restaurants in the Alta Badia sector of the Sella Ronda circuit in the spectacularly beautiful Dolomite mountains. This area includes the resorts of Corvara, Colfosco, San Cassiano and La Villa. Each dish was accompanied by a glass of specially selected wine and crowds of people sampled these creations skiing from hut to hut for a bargain price of just €40 on a lovely sunny day.

This was the launch of a season-long offering called ‘A Taste for Skiing’ of dishes designed by 14 Michelin-starred chefs for 14 different mountain restaurants. Every day the special dish and a glass of wine will be available for prices which range from 11 to 18 euros – an amazing bargain, especially compared with the prices charged by French and Swiss mountain restaurants.

Three of the chefs are from the local area, some from elsewhere in the Sud Tirol and others from the south of Italy (including Positano, Sicily and Puglia). Dishes ranged from delicate wine soup with herb croutons to hearty linguini with mussels and crunchy bread. Wines included selections from both the Sud Tirol and southern Italy.

Editor Watts was there and sampled more than his fare share of the dishes and wines. For his views see his blog My best ever start to a ski season.
