Austrian ski resort of Ischgl has confirmed singer James Blunt will open its winter season in November.

Known for his love of skiing and part-ownership in the La Vache restaurant in Verbier, James will open Ischgl’s 2014-15 season with a concert at the base of the mountain on Saturday 29 November, as part of his Moon Landing tour.

Ischgl is as famed for its 238km of high, snowsure slopes as it is for its Top Of The Mountain concerts, and the stars that open and close its five-month long winter season. Earlier this year, Robbie Williams and his big band closed the season on a snowy day early in May to a record-breaking crowd of 25,000 people — including WTSS.

Other big names to have appeared in Ischgl include Elton John, Deep Purple, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey.

“The legendary Ischgl season opener is to provide spectators with world-class entertainment surrounded by ideal winter sports facilities,” said Paznaun-Ischgl tourist director Andreas Steibl. “This is a unique experience. First enjoying skiing and boarding on the groomed pistes, with the live concert following in the evening.”

Ischgl is replacing the old four-seat Pardatschgrat gondola with a 28-seat gondola for this season, a €40m project that is nearing completion and will be operational for the November opening.

Entry to the James Blunt concert is free with a valid lift pass (€60 for the day of the concert and €88 for two days).
