Three famous mountains, one classic downhill

Carlo Janka of Switzerland won the 2010 Lauberhorn downhill race, in another classic weekend of World Cup racing.

A crowd of 30,000 turned out to watch the famous Wengen race, celebrating its 80th year this winter. The weekend’s events had already wooed the crowd on Friday with a stunning performance in the super-combined race from Bode Miller – who was also going well in the downhill, until a fall near the end put him out of the race.

Janka continued his top form clinching the gold from Manuel Osborne-Paradis of Canada. Third position went to the one-man competitor from Liechenstein – Marco Buechel. In fact, Buechel’s podium position delighted the 38-year-old who plans to retire at the end of the season.

The racing continued with an excellent win for Ivica Kostelic in the slalom, his first of the season.

The Lauberhorn is followed by another classic downhill: the infamous Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuehel, Austria – which is where the men’s World Cup teams head next week. Meanwhile, the ladies will be heading for Cortina, Italy.
