Heavy snowfall and rain is once again causing mayhem with travel in the Alps. In particular, we’ve heard this morning that roads around St Anton (170/520cm) in Austria were closed again.

With 30-70cm snow overnight on Friday and into Saturday, roads between the resort and St Christoph, and from the resort towards Pettneu were closed. Uplift has been restricted to the nursery and some lower lifts, while the rest remain closed due to increased avalanche risk. As previously though, the resort staff are working hard to keep things open and moving.

The resorts of Lech, Zuers and Stuben in the Vorarlberg, and the popular ski destination of Ischgl in Tirol, were inaccessible again after roads were blocked. It’s all due to persistent heavy snowfall to end the week, most of it on the high resorts or slopes at altitude. We have been told of heavy rain in the Ski Welt today.

The race day went ahead in Kitzbühel, but there have been further disruptions to the Youth Olympics – the freestyle skiing is one event that has been delayed.

Flights in to and our of Innsbruck have suffered delays or been diverted during the worst of the conditions, which are being exacerbated by high winds again. So expect some disruption if heading that way. (see our cam shot!)

Snow is also falling in the east of Austria too, the heaviest is expected to move north-east over the next couple of days. The forecast from the Arlberg is set to continued unsettled with further snow showers until mid week next week, apparently.

It’s snowing across France and Switzerland too; moderate to heavy falls in most places – Verbier, Chamonix and La Plagne are good examples. Winds are also strong here, but expected to ease as the weekend progresses. And some sunny spells are predicted.

Transfer day could prove chaotic for some.
