Spring on the Stubai

Stubai glacier - fun most of the year
The ski season may be over for most resorts, but the Stubai glacier takes late spring and summer snow seriously: learning about avalanches. But they also have fun on the slopes too.
The weekend of 8/9 May will be devoted to a two-day avalanche camp, hosted by the SAAC (Snow and Avalanche Awareness). The course is free and offers basic knowledge in mountain safety and avalanche information, all given by certified guides. The first day involves a three-hour theory course; day two gets you off-piste with the guides in small groups.
Not only is the course free, but the necessary equipment is included too – so all you need to do is get yourself there (and have a lift pass). You’ll need to be a competent skier or boarder off-piste and be over 14 years of age.
Currently, the Stubai glacier has 17 lifts open, with runs down to the mid-station at Fernau. They plan to keep the Moreboards Stubai Zoo terrain park open until the end of May, and the snow still looks good enough for that …
Fans of the area, may be interested to know that the resort is building a new restaurant up on the glacier slopes too. The new two-tier Eisgrat will feature a large self-service restaurant, and a much smaller table-service area (seating 60). It is due to reopen this autumn 2010.
