World Cup lead for Janka

Carlo Janka of Switzerland is in a strong position to take the men’s overall World Cup title, having won the downhill race in Garmishch Partenkirchen on Wednesday.

Janka stormed the Kandahar in a time of 1:58:45 to take his fifth World Cup victory of the season. Janka now leads the overall men’s standings with 1073 points. He is just ahead of Benjamin Raich in second and Didier Cuche in third.

But Cuche’s eighth place in the race hasn’t toppled his leader board position in the downhill itself, winning him his third World Cup downhill title in four years.

Both Cuche and Janka are providing Switzerland with an excellent racing season, whereas Austria seemed to have slipped back – failing to secure any medals in the Olympics. Raich, though, is a slalom specialist so could make up the 54-point gap in the two remaining slalom events if Janka fails to score in Thursday’s super-G.

The German races are the finale to a long series, with three remaining men’s competitions to contest and the women’s races also taking place in the resort this weekend.
