The upside

  • Excellent, testing long runs for confident intermediates
  • Good mix of high, open slopes and lower woodland runs
  • Good mountain restaurants
  • Excellent thermal spas, but ...

The downside

  • Main resorts are spa towns, lacking the usual Austrian resort ambience
  • Valley slopes are split into five areas, and having a car helps
  • Lacks genuinely easy long runs for painless progression

    News – 2017/18

Work continues on the revamp of the Schlossalm sector above Bad Hofgastein, but the planned new gondola replacing the access funicular is not planned to open until December 2018.

    News – 2016/17

Work started on a major project to upgrade access to the Schlossalm sector above Bad Hofgastein, with the construction of a ski bridge across the valley road from the mountain to the location of the valley station of the gondola planned to replace the funicular. A fun slope was created near the Senderleitn chair in the Schlossalm sector.

    Summary

With its essentially red-gradient mountains and spa-town resorts, the Gastein valley is a bit different from Austrian ski resort norms. We prefer spacious Bad Hofgastein (which gets its own web page) to steeply tiered, rather urban Bad Gastein. But little rustic Dorfgastein, down the valley, is our favourite.
