Les Carroz-d'Arâches

France

Carroz

The upside

  • Part of a big, varied area, with plenty of terrain to suit everyone
  • Sizeable, family village, more animated than Flaine
  • Excellent facilities for children
  • Scenic setting, and glorious views
  • Very close to Geneva but ...

The downside

  • Weekends can be busy as a result
  • Lots of slow old chairlifts
  • In bad weather links to outer sectors of the area may be closed
  • Nightlife not a highlight
  • Little to do off the slopes (in particular Flaine)

Summary

Les Carroz is a sprawling, sunny, traditional resort at one end of the big Grand Massif ski area shared with Flaine. It is a sizeable place that has the lived-in feel of a real French village, where life revolves around the central square with its pavement cafes and restaurants. It caters particularly well for families, including good-value hotels, but has a much broader appeal than that. There are good woodland runs immediately above the village for bad-weather days, with the whole area to explore when the sun shines. The Grand Massif is almost a match for Val d’Isère and Tignes in extent, at least, but it’s less well-linked to and from Flaine itself.

News – this season 2011/12

A new six-pack, the Désert Blanc, replaced the old Perdrix and Platé chairs. More snowmaking was added to the bottom of the Faust, Almandine and Serpentine runs. And there is a new children’s boardercross course. In Les Carroz, snowmaking was increased along the Combe blue run back to the resort.

News – last season

A new slope linked Forêt to Forum. The 3-star Terrasses de Veret apartments in Forêt and the 4-star Refuge du Golf above Hameau de Flaine opened.
