Flaine

France

Flaine

The upside

  • Big, varied area, with plenty of terrain to suit most levels of skill
  • Reliable snow in the main bowl
  • Compact, convenient, mainly car-free village, plus traditional villages on the lower fringes of the area
  • Excellent facilities for children
  • Very close to Geneva airport

The downside

  • Some slow old chairlifts, though things are improving
  • Austere 1960s buildings
  • In bad weather, main Flaine bowl offers little to do, and links to outer sectors of the area may be closed
  • Nightlife not a highlight
  • Little to do off the slopes (in Flaine

Summary

Flaine is best known as a convenient resort catering particularly well for families, but it has a much broader appeal than that. The Grand Massif is almost a match for Val d’Isère/Tignes in terms of extent, at least.
Flaine’s family orientation is underlined by the domination of apartments. But you open up more lodging options by considering the outlying traditional villages – Samoëns (which has its own chapter) and Les Carroz and Morillon (covered here). They also have woodland slopes for bad-weather days.

News – this season 2011/12

A new six-pack, the Désert Blanc, is due to replace the old Perdrix and Platé chairs. More snowmaking is to be added to the bottom of the Faust, Almandine and Serpentine runs.

News – last season

A new slope linked Forêt to Forum. The 3-star Terrasses de Veret apartments in Forêt and the 4-star Refuge du Golf above Hameau de Flaine opened.
