Lech

Austria

Resort and river

The upside

  • Picturesque traditional village
  • Sunny but quite high slopes with excellent snow record
  • Sizeable area of intermediate pistes, plus extensive off-piste
  • Easy access by bus to the slopes of St Anton and other Arlberg resorts
  • Some very smart hotels
  • Lots of lovely heated chairlifts
  • Lively après-ski scene

The downside

  • Pricey, by Austrian standards
  • Surprisingly limited shopping
  • Few non-hotel bars or restaurants
  • Local traffic intrudes on main street
  • Very few challenging pistes
  • Nearly all slopes above treeline
  • Blue runs back to Lech are rather steep for nervous novices
  • Still a few slow, old lifts

Summary

Lech and its higher, linked neighbour Zürs are the most fashionable resorts in Austria, each able to point to a string of celebrity visitors, and to pull in Porsche-borne Germans by the thousand. Don’t worry: we don’t feel out of place here in our VWs, and neither would you.
The real point about Lech is that it offers excellent skiing on and off-piste (with one of the best snow records in the Alps) combined with a village that is a pleasure to inhabit – particularly if you can afford to stay in one of its lovely top hotels. And Zürs? In its bleak setting, it is never going to be a match for Lech; but the real problem is the through-traffic. The road to Lech needs to be buried in a tunnel. A whip-round among the owners of the four 5-star hotels should be enough to raise the necessary.

News – this season 2011/12
