The upside
- Unspoiled valley town with access to quiet, crowd-free slopes
- Great views towards the Jungfrau area and the nearby lakes
- Cheap by Swiss resort standards
- Plenty to do off the slopes
- Very sunny slopes, but ...
The downside
- Snow is badly affected by the sun
- It’s very much a red-run mountain, with few pistes that are genuinely easy or particularly challenging
- Slopes are reached by bus or cable car from Meiringen, with no runs back to the valley (though there are hotels on the mountain, too)

Summary
Even if you haven’t heard of Meiringen, you’ve certainly heard of its most famous product, the meringue; the sugary dessert is said to have been created here and named after the town. Its ski area is unlikely to achieve the same fame, but it’s a scenic and interesting mountain – aka Hasliberg – that will appeal to confident intermediates looking for an escape from crowds. At these altitudes the sunny orientation is a real worry as spring approaches, though.
