Passo Tonale

PassoTonale1

The upside

  • Good-value, plain accommodation
  • Sunny, easy, snow-sure slopes
  • Good for beginners and early or timid intermediates
  • Link to Ponte di Legno adds attractive, steeper, treelined runs

The downside

  • Not much locally for experts or keen intermediates
  • Main slopes are above the treeline and unpleasant in bad weather
  • Linear village strung along the pass road lacks charm

Summary

Passo Tonale offers that rare combination of a fair-sized, uncrowded, snow-sure ski area and slope-side hotels at a bargain price. Who cares if it lacks charm? It’s a great place for beginners and, now that it is linked to the slopes above Ponte di Legno, a more interesting destination for intermediates than it was.
