San Cassiano

Italy

SanCassiano CG2

The upside

  • Easy local slopes set on a spur off the main Sella Ronda circuit
  • Suits early intermediates particularly well
  • Stunning, unique Dolomite scenery
  • Extensive snowmaking, one of Europe’s best systems
  • Lots of mountain huts with good food
  • Small, quiet, pretty village with some good hotels

The downside

  • Natural snowfall is erratic in the Dolomites
  • Few challenges; off-piste limited and possibly banned in places
  • Mostly short runs with limited vertical
  • Crowds on the Sella Ronda circuit
  • Alta Badia still has plenty of slow lifts and drags.
  • Very quiet après-ski

News – 2016/17

At Arabba, the old double chair lift from the village to Portados at mid-mountain is being replaced by a n 8-seater gondola. This links with a higher fast chair that gets you on the way to Passo Pordoi, improving traffic flow on the clockwise Sella Ronda circuit. In a radical upgrade, the Gran Paradiso button lift at Piz Sella is being replaced by a covered 8-seater with heated seats – Italy’s first, apparently; seats are in a “striking blue,” you’ll be excited to hear.

Summary

San Cassiano is a quiet village with some very smart and comfortable hotels. Its local ski area, set on a spur off the main Sella Ronda circuit, has predominantly easy intermediate slopes and is very convenient for the famous Hidden Valley run. Individual runs are short; verticals of more than 500m are rare.
