Lake LouiseCanada
The upside
- Spectacular high-mountain scenery, in a largely unspoilt wilderness
- Large ski area by local standards
- Snowy slopes of Sunshine Village within reach (see Banff chapter)
- Excellent very scenic cross-country
The downside
- ‘Village’ is just a few hotels and shops, quiet in the evening
- Slopes a drive or bus ride away
- Snowfall record modest
- Can be very cold, and the chairlifts have no covers

Summary
If you care more for scenery than for après-ski action, Lake Louise is worth considering for a holiday. We’ve seen a few spectacular mountain views, and the view from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel of the Victoria Glacier across frozen Lake Louise is as spectacular as they come: simply stunning.
Even if you prefer the more animated base of Banff, you’ll want to make expeditions to Lake Louise during your holiday. It can’t compete with Sunshine Village for quantity of snow, but it’s an interesting mountain. And from the slopes you get a distant version of that stunning view.
