Where to Ski And Snowboard -

Review of Schladming

8th February 2008 by Ewan Barr

Just returned from Schladming and pleasantly surprised by the size and quality of the area, particularly Hauser Kaibling and Reiteralm areas. Maybe we were lucky with the dates (January is very popular with Russians). However we found the slopes fairly quiet and the quality of pisting glorious, perhaps until late afternoon when things got a little choppy.
We stayed at the Zum Kaiserweg which has a great selling point of location (next to new Planai west Gondola) and, although clean, the service and food would not rank that highly I’m afraid. I think that the Rohrmoos / Hochwurzen area is much better as a hotel location, especially for families etc.
Fageralm is good for a bad weather day, Planai is good for a morning warm-up, especially red run 1.
Recommend Onkel Willy’s on Planai, Tauern Alm on Hochwurzen and the restaurant at the top of Reiteralm (Gesslohs?) with the amazing ribs - wow.
The town is fairly cutesy but no need to stay down there really.
We enjoyed Maria’s Mexican restaurant/bar of an evening - avoid the new 3 storey place next to the main Planai gondola - lots of jaded singing “stars” and dreary Euro-pop and no atmosphere.
