Visited Sölden for the first time in early March. I was impressed by the skiing, less so by the town - which is noisy, busy, strung out and just a bit grubby. Top marks though for the extent and variety of pistes – it’s a much bigger area than it looks on the map - and you get a real sense of travel on the Big 3 Rally, to the glacier and then back to town. The Giggijoch gondola is plagued by queues, but the new Gaislachkogl lifts clear any backlog really swiftly. However, the skiing in this sector is much tougher than the Giggi area - loads of fun blues and reds served by several high-speed chairs.
The Giggijoch apart, queues were rarely a problem, but some of the piste classification is a bit of a lottery: Red 1 should be black at the top, black 3 should be red, for example. Mountain restaurants were good, the Heide Alm apart. Poor, off-hand service and the food was nothing to write home about and definitely not worth the itinerary run in - or the T-bar out!
I would revisit Soelden but would probably opt to stay again in one of the quieter suburbs and use the efficient ski buses.
