Review of Wengen

27th February 2017 by DaveGJ

We visited in jan 2017. Stayed in an excellent self catered apartment near the church rented through Swiss Maid Services.

Conditions were generally quite good but poorer snow lower down. We found skiing in Wengen and Grindelwald reasonably well linked. The cable car from Wengen was a much quicker entry to the skiing than using the train. The link to First is not too bad but the bus does take a while to link from the Mannlichen gondola to the First gondola. It’s more like a locals bus service than a skiers one as it stops for several minutes in the centre of Grindelwald. The First gondola and the Mannlichen one are both still very slow and take over 30 minutes.

However, this all seemed very slick compared with going to Murren. It took us 2 hours from leaving Wengen until we were able to ski in Murren. The Winteregg and adjoining chair in Murren were not running so we were recommended to take the bus from Lauterbrunnen and then the three stages of cable car. We hit longish queues in Murren so the whole journey was tortuous and wasted a lot of skiing time. The 2 cable cars , bus and train back to Wengen took about 90 minutes. I’ve skied in many resorts but never been faced by journeys of this length before. It’s equivalent to going to an entirely separate place rather than a supposedly linked resort.

These frustrations aside, it has to be said that the scenery is stunning, the people friendly and we otherwise did very little queuing for lifts. There are some good long cruising runs and we enjoyed the downhill and slalom runs in Wengen and the blacks in Murrren.

We enjoyed happy hour at Sinas pub (drinks more affordable than is the norm in this resort) and apres drinks in the Pickel bar. The Eigernordwand hotel at Kleine Scheidegg served decent food (good rostis and pasta dishes) on the terrace with a stunning view of the Eiger. Mary’s Cafe near Wengen also did good food. There was decent soup and gulaschsuppe at the Mannlichen Berghaus and at Am Alpwaeg on the run down into Grindelwald from First, and at Adi’s bar on First and the station restaurant at Grindelwald Grund.

We had an excellent evening meal at the Hotel Baeren and good pizza at Pizzeria Pajazzo. Didn’t find the food as good at Sinas pizzeria.
