Where to Ski And Snowboard -

Review of Alpe d'Huez

3rd February 2011 by judithphillip

The name “L’île au soleil” is very apt.  Alpe d’Huez is said to have 300 days of sunshine and we certainly had 6 very sunny days there in January.  Despite no new snow for two weeks, the pistes were all very skiable. Alpe d’Huez has great snow making facilities and the pisteurs do a great job.  Bit disappointed that the Sarenne run was closed as had wanted to ski this famous long black run.  You can normally achieve your “first 8000m” by doing just 4 downhill runs. Loved skiing over to the satellites of Oz and Vaujany, down through the trees, and also over to Auris for the great restaurant at La Combe Haute and into the forgotten village at Maron (La Garde).  Good stomach needed for the chair lift over - it’s an almost vertical drop into the gorge and up the other side.
Had a brilliant week in Chalet La Source in Villard Reculas at the recommendation of a review in Where to Ski and Snowboard and I must say that this was the best chalet experience we have ever had.  Excellent food and hospitality, great ski guiding and peaceful little village.
Great holiday.
