Whistler

Canada

Village at night

The upside

  • North America’s biggest ski area
  • Excellent combination of high open bowls and woodland trails
  • Good snow record
  • Almost Alpine scenery
  • Attractive modern village, purpose-built with car-free central areas
  • Good range of village restaurants and lively après-ski

The downside

  • Proximity to Pacific Ocean means a lot of cloudy weather, and rain at resort level is not unusual
  • Inadequate lift system; queues can be a big problem at peak times
  • Overcrowded runs also a problem
  • Mountain restaurants are overcrowded and mostly no more than functional
  • Resort restaurants over-busy, too

    News – 2017/18

A new suspension bridge will span 130 metres from Whistler Peak to the West Ridge, crossing high above Whistler Bowl and ‘offering captivating views of the mountain range’. At the West Ridge, there’ll be a multi-tiered viewing platform with 360° views and a cantilevered walkway will extend 12.5 metres out from the West Ridge 50 metres above Whistler Bowl.

A new ‘pod’ hotel will open with 88 private sleeping pods for budget travellers.

For 2018/19 a new gondola is planned from the base of Blackcomb mountain to a top station next to the Peak 2 Peak gondola, replacing the existing Wizard and Solar chair lifts.

    News – 2016/17

In the summer of 2016, Vail Resorts bought the company which owns and runs the mountains and some of the base area facilities and said it intended to ‘preserve the unique brand and character of the resort’.

The beginner area on Whistler mountain was improved, with increased terrain and two new covered moving carpet lifts. Snowmaking was further improved and seven new grooming machines were added to the fleet. And the patio areas of Roundhouse Lodge and the Garibaldi Lift Co were expanded with more heated seats added.

    Summary

Whistler is unlike any other resort in North America. In some respects – the scale, the high bowls and glaciers, the scenery, the crowds – it is more like an Alpine resort. But like most resorts on the western side of North America, it offers the advantages of usually excellent snow and a lot of woodland runs too.

All things considered, the mountain is about the best that North America has to offer, and for us a visit here is always a highlight of the season. But we’ll admit that we are generally lucky with the weather, and haven’t had to put up with much rain at resort level – a real hazard. And we try to time our visits to avoid peak periods and weekends, and therefore the worst of the crowds.
