Skiing a year ago today…

A year ago today… was my last skiing day of the season. After four days of a planned week-long research trip to Swiss resorts, Nicky Holford and I cut short our trip and flew home.

The news was full of Austrian resorts closing due to the spreading Coronavirus and with the Swiss government due to make an announcement on the virus that afternoon, we decided at breakfast to change our plans and get flights home that evening.

Good job we did – when we are at the airport the Swiss government announced that it was shutting down all Swiss ski areas, so we would not have been able to ski Verbier and Villars as planned had we stayed.

Click on the links to read about the first two days of our trip in Val d’Anniviers and the last two days in Val d’Hérens and Veysonnaz and about the very special Bella Tola hotel we stayed at in St Luc in Val d’Anniviers.

Little did I know on my last day (Friday 13th March) that I would not ski again for well over a year.

This is the first season that I have not skied since I first started skiing in 1978 – 43 years ago.

Like most WTSS readers, I am looking forward to the day when things get back as far as possible to ‘normal’ and to enjoying the delights of skiing and the mountains again. Fingers crossed for next season.
