Behind the scenes in Megève with Stanford Skiing

The Chalet-Hotel Rond Point has been updated for this season
The ski area of Megève is due to open several weeks early thanks to the abundance of snow that has fallen over the Alps in the past week — and so far it’s looking like this is going to be a good snow year.
There is partial opening of the Rochebrune area for the weekend of 3-4 December and Mont d’Arbois joins in for the following weekend, 10-11 December. The piste bashers have clearly been out on some of the slopes already, so that is an excellent sign for this coming ski season — the full area is due to open 17 December and at Stanford Skiing we are offering a nine-day skiing break over Christmas for the price of five from 18-27 December for just £550 per person including chalet board and transfers in the catered Chalet-Hotel Sylvana.
There is loads of snow for this time of year, and snow is forecast over the next three days higher up although not at village level. Most importantly it gets us all in the mood for skiing and excited about the coming ski season – the Christmas tree is up in the square and we’ve been out buying Christmas goodies for all the chalets.
New snow in Megève: Rory has been busy digging out cars!
Rory, our resort manager, is already working hard at making the rooms perfect for our guests’ arrival, filling in never-ending paper work and carrying out any last-minute maintenance jobs — though over the past week he’s also had to spend time digging cars out of the snow, and clearing driveways! The rest of the staff arrive out in Megève at the beginning of December to be trained so that they are ready to make sure our guests have a fantastic time.
Our chefs are already preparing menus for all our chalets — we like to provide plentiful and delicious food to spoil our guests. Here is a quick shot of just one of the starters from last year at our Hotel Rond Point – our team in the UK office (including me) have to test the menus during the summer – what a chore…!
Fancy tucking into this after skiing? We like to spoil our guests
This summer we have also been finishing an update to our Chalet-Hotel Rond Point, which has always been a favourite with our guests because of its location near the town centre and a short walk to the gondola up Rochebrune. While the building is well-equipped and comfortable, up until mid-2015 the reception area was still a little haphazard and higglety-pigglety.
Finally, over the course of two inter-season maintenance periods between Autumn 2015 and Summer 2016, we have now completely renovated the living room and bar. For those of you that have known the Rond Point over the years, you will see from our lovely new photos that it’s nearly unrecognisable. The bar is now out of the way of the main seating area, instead acting as an elegant partition between the chalet kitchen and the rest of the room. This leaves much more space for our new, comfy sofas and opens up the area around the fireplace for just the type of cosy seats you need to sink into after a long day on the slopes.
Throw in a full paint job, new cream carpets, a fluffy rug and a handy tea and coffee station and you end up with what is now one of our favourite rooms in resort!
We’ve been busy buying Christmas bits and pieces for the chalets
New in Megève this year is the Palais des Sports, a 675m2 swimming space being unveiled on 17 December. You can swim both inside and outside enjoying great views of the mountains, as well enjoy indoor and outdoor saunas and hammams and a lazy river — as well as something they’ve called “Swan Hill”. We’re not sure what that is but it sounds intriguing we can’t wait to find out! There’s also a children’s area and an indoor five-lane pool for those who want to do some more serious swimming and a second indoor activity pool for aqua gym and aqua bike. There’s also a new cardio gym, a climbing wall, tennis, pottery, spa and wellbeing centre. It opens until 20:00 every day and 21:30 on Wednesdays.
Lots of reasons to visit Megève this year! For more information and for our updated offers, visit stanfordskiing.co.uk
