I spent a week earlier this month with my wife and a couple of friends in a fab 3-bedroom apartment in Zermatt that definitely deserves a place in the Smart apartments chapter of WTSS.

Avid readers of that chapter will know that I’ve been taking my annual week’s ski holiday, with my wife and a couple of friends, in self-catered apartments for over 25 years now. And we’ve stayed in some pretty luxurious places. I thought the Zermatt apartment we rented from Interhome last year was pretty splendid. But this year we rented one booked through Alpine Answers and run by Mountain Exposure and it was truly outstanding – easily the best place we’ve had in over 25 years, we all agreed.

Alpine Answers did a great job of searching out something that would suit us, with our specific requirements of 3 smart good-sized bedrooms, at least two modern bathrooms and loos, big luxurious living room, fairly central, on the flat not up the hill (many Zermatt apartments are) but with a Matterhorn view.

They came up with various options but recommended one of Mountain Exposure’s properties. Mountain Exposure is a Zermatt specialist and runs 24 luxurious chalets and apartments (eight of which are offered with catering) dotted throughout Zermatt.

Ours was a modern, top-floor self-catered apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows and a south-facing balcony giving stunning views of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ski area and the Matterhorn itself. The living room was huge with comfy sofas and easy chairs. And the three bedrooms were all good sized with ample storage and hanging space. The two bathrooms both had walk-in showers and one had a fab Jaccuzzi bath where you adjusted the bubbles with a remote control while sat in the bath.

Mountain Exposure’s concierge meets you at the train station with a taxi on arrival, takes you to your chalet and is on hand to help out all week, booking restaurants, arranging ski lessons etc. Self-catered guests are offered the option of a gourmet 3-course meal cooked in your own chalet or one of their flagship properties by a top chef and including canapés, champagne and specially selected wines. You are also offered delivery of frozen gourmet meals (eg confit de canard, fish casserole) to heat up yourself. We tried both options and loved them.

Outside peak season, their properties are available to rent for short breaks as well as week-long holidays.
