Franz Klammer, former Olympic downhill gold medallist and winner of 25 World Cup downhills, is no mean golfer either. He plays off 6 and comes over to the UK every September to host the Franz Klammer Wooden Spoon golf day for around 100 journalists, tour operators and Austrian colleagues.

It is one of the highlights of my golfing year (I play off 24 if you really want to know) and a couple of years ago had the privilege to play with the great man himself; I can vouch not only for his golfing ability and friendly outgoing personality but also his prowess at finding other people’s balls in the rough and the woods.

That day I was also playing with Arnie Wilson, editor of the Ski Club of Great Britain’s magazine, who won the wooden spoon then and again this year – and, between the two of us, we tested Franz’s ball hunting capability to the full.

Austria has some great golf courses, as I discovered a few summers ago on a tour of six in the Tirol and Salzburgerland, including the famously mountainous Eichenheim course near Kitzbühel.

The 13th Klammer Wooden Spoon golf day took place at Dulwich Sydenham golf club on 21 September.
