The charming Austrian resort of Kitzbühel, with its car-free medieval centre, makes a great place for a weekend break. It’s only around 90 minutes away from either Salzburg or Innsbruck airport, has a train station in the heart of the village and has lots to do on and off the mountain.

As well as 234km of varied ski slopes to suit all standards, there are plenty of other winter wonderland activities to try. These include tobogganing, ice skating, curling, cross-country skiing, tandem paragliding, snowshoeing and winter hiking. Plus there’s the extensive Aquarena pool, spa and health centre to enjoy.

Just strolling around the charming network of ancient streets and lanes in the pedestrianised town centre admiring the architecture is very pleasant. If you enjoy shopping, you’ll love the wide variety of shops, including clothing and jewellery from top designer brands and arts and crafts from talented local artisans.

Plus of course there are plenty of cake and coffee shops, bars and restaurants. The restaurants include no fewer than 13 featured in the Gault Millau guide but there are plenty of other places to eat, many serving wholesome dishes sourced from local farmers.

If you time your visit carefully you could take in one of Kitzbühel’s many famous events. These kick off with ‘Advent in Kitzbühel’,  an atmospheric and jolly Christmas market in the historic town centre and with over 30 huts and stalls selling everything from Christmas decorations to local handicraft items and food and drink. Children can enjoy a traditional Merry-Go-Round and pony rides. The market runs from 27 November to 26 December 2019.

Other events later in the season include a huge New Year firework display, the famous Hahnenkamm races and the Snow Polo World Cup – more on these in a feature planned for late December.
