Canadian Developments

19th September 2005, by Chris Gill

Two of the big developments in Canada at present are a new ice hotel and a major expansion of Kicking Horse.

The Ice Hotel, opens in December 2005 at the Sun Peaks Resort. Constructed entirely of ice and snow, it maintains an internal temperature of between -2 and -5 degrees Celsius. As per other ice hotels, it will be reconstructed each winter and operate between December and April. It is probably worth a visit with admission prices of CAD $20 for adults and free for children 12 and under.  However, the room rates will give you a chill even if the ice does not - from CAD $500 to CAD $1,000 per night.

Meanwhile Kicking Horse has announced a further CAD $21 million expansion to its accommodation facilities as well as improved piste-grooming and a new mid-station on the Catamount chair. Whereas, three years ago, Kicking Horse was an interesting, if isolated, spot for a day trip, it is steadily turning into a mainstream resort.
