Lenzerheide secures 2013 World Cup finals
Lenzerheide in eastern Switzerland will host the 2013 Alpine World Cup finals, according to an FIS announcement.
The FIS council made the decision in its recent meeting in Vancouver, Canada, where they were finalising plans for next winter’s Alpine World Cup calendar.
Lenzerheide was competing against the French Three Valley’s resort Méribel, but won the vote by a large majority. Officials for the Swiss resort are said to be delighted. The event is sure to raise its profile as a ski resort, often overshadowed by better-known Arosa (on the other side of the mountain) and nearby Davos.
The Lenzerheide-Valbella region offers over 150km of slopes on both sides of a long valley, and is very convenient for a short break - being around two hours from Zurich and only 25 minutes drive up from Chur. A splendid spa centre, claimed to be the largest in the Alps, opened at the hotel Schweizerhof there last season - incorporating 1,500m2 of pool space, hamam and other leisure attractions. More recently, the resort made headlines following a vote against an ongoing project to link its slopes with those of Arosa.Lenzerheide
