North American resorts gear up for opening

Veterans’ Day on Friday 11 November is the day many major American resorts are aiming to open this year. But they are not the first.

Breckenridge, Keystone and Mammoth are among the American resorts planning to open on or just before Friday 11 November, the public holiday of Veterans’ Day. But they are almost a month behind America’s first opening, at Loveland in Colorado.

Loveland Ski Area fired-up its lifts at 9 a.m. on 5 October, making Loveland the first resort in North America to open for the sixth year in a row. Recent snowfall combined with Loveland’s snowmaking efforts enabled the resort to kick-off the 2005-06 ski season a week earlier than average.

After a disastrous last season, it must be a relief for” target=“_blank”>Whistler in western Canada to be planning one of its earliest ever openings. The resort will be open for the weekend, 5/6 November, open daily from November 11. Cold temperatures and back to back weather systems are in the forecast, and to judge by the resort webcams it’s already pretty snowy. They say they have 60 centimetres (24 inches) of recent snow at the Rendezvous Lodge at 1,860m/6,102ft.
