Rockfall brings chaos to 3 Vallées

A rock weighing more than 50 tonnes has fallen on the road serving Val Thorens and Les Menuires

Skiers heading to or from Val Thorens, Les Menuires and St-Martin-de-Belleville in France are facing severe delays today after a landslide on the road.

Yesterday afternoon (Friday, 27 March) a 50 cubic-metre rock fell on the main road that serves the Trois Vallées Val Thorens and Les Menuires from Moutiers. Small vans and cars are able to use a back road via Saint-Laurent-de-la Côte, but coaches cannot. Access is currently closed to or from the resorts until at least 5pm today, transfer day in the Alps.

A geologist has attended the scene to assess the situation.

Crystal Ski has said in a statement on its facebook page: “The Val Thorens road will be closed to coaches from: Val Thorens, Les Menuires and St Martin until 5pm Saturday. We’re working closely with the authorities and airports on plans for those affected.”
